Sagrada Familia Highlights

Basilica
In 1883, Antoni Gaudí was commissioned to design the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, a church dedicated to the Sagrada Familia. Dedicated to this project until his death in 1926, Gaudí laid its foundations and made models, knowing that he would not see it finished. His plans have guided architects ever since and, more than 140 years later, the Sagrada Familia remains unfinished, although it is expected to be completed in 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
Interiors
Like the rest of the basilica, there is much to see inside. The interior of the basilica, testimony to Gaudí’s genius, combines Gothic naturalism with sacred symbolism and motifs from nature. The Latin cross plan, with its five-nave nave, three-nave transept and large ambulatory, reflects Gaudí’s visionary style. The church’s columns, like towering tree trunks, rise to a vaulted canopy that evokes a majestic forest, while the stained glass windows project a divine kaleidoscope of light. Here, one truly feels in the presence of the Almighty.

Facades
The Sagrada Familia has three monumental facades, each related to the life of Jesus Christ:
The Nativity Façade represents the birth of Christ and was the first part of the church built by Gaudí.
The Passion Façade represents the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.
The Façade of Glory represents the eternal glory of Christ and is the only one that remains to be finished. It presents scenes of Christ’s ascension to heaven and eternal beatitude. Although unfinished, the glory façade is already taller than any of the other towers of the church.
Towers
The towers of the Sagrada Familia are a formidable spectacle. Of the 18 planned, 9 have been erected: the four on the Nativity façade, the four on the Passion façade and the tower of the Virgin Mary. The Nativity towers look out over the eastern horizon, while the Passion towers look out over the heart of Barcelona. An elevator can take you up to the sky, but the descent must be done on foot.
Access to the towers is not part of the normal entrance; a special ticket is required to enter the church and climb the Nativity or Passion Façade tower.
